On the night of 22 October 1707, twenty-one ships of the Royal Navy were sailing home to England. They were returning from the Mediterranean under Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, one of the most experienced seamen alive. The fleet had fought through weeks of storms. The men were tired. Home was close.
The admiral needed to know one thing: where, exactly, was the fleet?
In 1707, a captain in open water had two ways to answer that question.
The best way was to look up. Find one star — Polaris, the North Star, the only point in the whole sky that stays still — and measure its height above the horizon. That single sight, taken against something outside the ship, something that does not move and does not care what anyone on board believes, tells you your latitude. One star, one measurement, and you know where you are.
But a star sight needs a sky. For weeks, storm and cloud had sealed it shut. Night after night the fleet sailed under a ceiling of grey, and Polaris never showed. So the captains fell back on the only other way there was: their own numbers.
A captain knew his speed — measured by throwing a rope with knots over the side and counting how fast it ran out. He knew his heading, from a compass. He knew his time, from a sandglass turned every half hour. He wrote these numbers into the logbook, and from them he computed his position. Speed, times time, along a heading. Sailors called it dead reckoning.
Dead reckoning works. Until it doesn't.
